Vineyard Notes
The 2022 growing season was marked by a dry winter and a mostly mild summer. Early bud break was followed by some spring rain and frost, which resulted in lower yields but concentrated flavors. The region's signature fog helped moderate temperatures, allowing the grapes to ripen gradually and develop good acidity. A September heatwave accelerated the harvest, but winemakers were generally pleased with the resulting high-quality fruit.
Production Notes
Esmeralda is a selection of Calera and Swan clones. This year, it is 80% Calera. The Calera provides thicker skin, which in turn gives you boldness, while the Swan clone gives you the finesse and brightness. The two clones create opulent, bold, and rich flavors, while still preserving the delicacy and gracefulness of a classic Pinot Noir.
Tasting Notes
The Esmeralda Pinot Noir displays a captivating ruby hue. Its nose blends ripe red berries—wild strawberry, tart cherry, and raspberry—with delicate rose petals and an intriguing earthy whisper of forest floor. Sweet spice completes the aromatic profile.
On the palate, this Pinot Noir boasts exquisite balance and graceful structure. Silky tannins and bright acidity carry red fruit flavors, joined by a nuanced umami. The finish is long and ethereal, revealing red fruit, subtle minerality, and warmth.
Food Pairing Notes
This elegant Pinot would pair well with Wild Mushroom Risotto. The creamy, umami-rich risotto, especially when made with wild mushrooms, mirrors these wines complex characteristics, making them sing. The wine's acidity also helps to cut through the richness of the risotto, preventing the dish from feeling too heavy.
