Vineyard Notes
The 2020 vintage in Russian River was remarkably challenging due to what seemed like an endless loop of devastating fires. However, when the fire broke out, the grapes already had a spectacular growing season. Luckily, the harvest was one of the earliest on record, and the fruit was of exceptional quality, rich, and vibrant, with almost zero sorting. While production was down, the vintage was one of the finest ever for Pinot Noir.
Production Notes
Esmeralda is a selection of Calera and Swan clones. This year, it is almost 80% Calera. The Calera provides thicker skin, which in turn gives you boldness, while the Swan clone gives you the finesse and brightness. The two clones create opulent, bold, and rich flavors, while still preserving the delicacy and gracefulness of a classic Pinot Noir.
Tasting Notes
The intense, rich and bold color immediately impresses. Bouquets of dark cherry, wet stone, pomegranate, salted caramel, sweet clove, ripe raspberry, and mushrooms dominate the senses. The palate unloads exciting bright ripe raspberry, cardamom, vanilla, clove, strawberry and cherry pie. Esmeralda is truly a Cab drinkers Pinot, with a big velvety mouthfeel, firm and integrated tannins, great concentration, and a long finish. This could age for 20+ years.
Food Pairing Notes
This bold and spectacular Pinot would pair well with a myriad of dishes, but if you wish for the perfect pairing, try it with Five-Spice Roasted Duck with Roasted Root Vegetables.
