Vineyard Notes
This limited production Syrah comes from the Cortese Vineyard in the hills of Coombsville. The Coombsville appellation, east of the city of Napa, is a crescent-shaped area in the foothills of the Vaca Range, where alluvial soils cover volcanic ash from Mt. George with cobblestone-strewn layers of rich, gravelly loams. This very temperate micro-climate allows the grapes to ripen slowly and steadily. Coombsville wines can often be recognized by their soft but significant tannins.
Production Notes
From bud-break to harvest, near-perfect conditions resulted in fruit of optimal ripeness, balance, and quality. The 2012 vintage is being heralded as one of Napa Valley’s best.
Tasting Notes
A deep purple color is the first sign that this is a bold, seductive wine. Vibrant aromas of rose petal, raspberry, roasted coffee, black pepper, and incense entice the nose. Rich and velvety on the palate from entry to finish, with deep red cherry and berry, bittersweet dark chocolate, toasted oak, and a subtle minerality. Full-bodied with firm acidity, supple texture, and elegant tannins that linger, this complex Syrah has all the hallmarks of Old World winemaking.
Food Pairing Notes
Smoked gouda cheese, grilled lamb chops, braised beef with fresh pasta, or roasted wild mushrooms with herbs.
